Scheveningen Beach Walk!

                                    Pic by celesteh

Since the time I started blogging about my expat and travel experiences on Orangesplaash, I have had the privilege to come in contact with some of the most wonderful and talented bloggers and writers. It has given me an opportunity to learn and share so much making this experience a fulfilling one. Therefore, as a part of the "Blogs of the World" initiative in PocketCultures, I thought it would be wonderful to share some such blogs with everyone.

This week I share one such blog - A Touch of Dutch, where Isabella shares her experiences living in The Netherlands from the point of view of an American. Its a must read blog for all expats in The Netherlands!! Read my entry here.

On a side note, my latest post for the EALC is on " A day out at the Scheveningen Beach in The Hague". Do check it out. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in The Netherlands. I have already written about our last visit to the Scheveningen beach when we visited the beach early one saturday morning and enjoyed the calm and cool waters!

Visit to Bruges, Belgium Part I - The Canals!

We heard and read so much about Bruges, a lovely city in the Flemish region of Belgium that finally we decided to go and check it out for ourselves. Also known as "The Venice of the North" Bruges - you hear - is a beautiful picturesque place but since we have been to the "original" Venice, we weren't sure whether we would like Bruges or not.

And did we like it? You bet! Bruges is truly one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Picture perfect canals along picture perfect houses - calm clear waters dotted with tiny boats - the city center (declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its medieval architecture - shops laden with intricate lace work and the most delicious, mouthwatering chocolates on earth!!! What else could you ask for?

We drove to Bruges early in the morning and after parking our car in one of the garages on the south part of the city for the day, we took to the streets and bylanes of Bruges. One of the most wonderful ways of getting around in Bruges is on foot - ignore the sightseeing buses and the horse carriages completely.

We first explored the historic city center of Bruges but that will be another post. Once we left the city center and took a right at the Marks Square, we were face to face with the lovely waters and the canals. A boat ride along the city canals costs around 6 - we popped into one of the tiny boats.

Now, while taking the boat ride either you can observe the beauty and allow it to sink in or you can click pictures. We were fortunate enough to have been able to achieve both and so here are some of the clicks. Pictures cannot do full justice to this awesome place though!

The guide during the boat ride gave us a sneak peak into the lives of the Flemish people and the beautiful houses surrounding the canals - coming up in the next post!

Dutch Service System - An unforgettable experience!!

I would like to share a small but a heart touching incident that took place last week. We hear many things about the Dutch Service System - some good, mostly bad. This author has been guilt of the same once too. But it was in Media Markt that our impression took a 360 degree turn.

Day 1 - We were shopping around for a new Television in Media Markt last week. After our shopping, the person at the counter wanted us to fill up the guarantee form (since we had purchased a new 40 inch LCD). As is his habit, my hubby took out his Residence Permit since long  Indian names have also been difficult with the Dutch to pronounce and spell out. But after the billing, somehow hubby forgot to take the card back! He is very careful with all these things absolutely always so there was no question of complaining.

Cut to Day 2 - It was only in the morning the next day that we realized what had happened. For the record, the Residence Permit is like the most important document in The Netherlands for an expat (of course the passport has its own importance!). We shuddered at the thoughts of having to visit the IND again, go through all the paperwork and dole out a large amount in fees.

We both were like totally blank. Where did the card go? Where did we leave it?  When did we see the card for the last time? Where all did we use it? and so on were the questions that were racing through the mind culminating in the realization that we had left it in the Media Markt the previous day.

Now, came the difficult part - "Will the card still be there?" I thought.
"Someone must have seen it and so it should be there. There is nothing to worry." - pat came my hubby's reply.
    I was still apprehensive though.

Alright then, we drove right away to the Media Markt and approached the sales guy Mike who had sold us the TV the day before. My heart skipped a beat and I only heard a faint - " Yes, I saw the card and have deposited it at the counter" - Oh my God, I cant believe this!!

Mike then accompanied us to the counter, but the person at the counter wasn't there. Mike waited all this while with us, then himself started looking for the card amidst the pile of the other stuff. Outside the counter, we were waiting anxiously with our fingers crossed - and then at last he found the Permit. Gosh, we were ecstatic!!

We thanked Mike profusely for all his wonderful help and concern. This post is dedicated to all such service guys who bring a smile on the face and relief to the mind.
And since then, hubby uses his business card for spelling out his name :)

Have you had any such experiences too? Share them here..

Cycle Tour along the Lisse Tulips Fields!

I am an ardent fan of the Keukenhof tulips gardens. It is the one of the most photographed gardens in the world - you get to see tulips and other flower bulbs in all shapes, sizes and colors here. Since we had been to Keukenhof last year, this year we decided to go right in the fields among the tulips and therefore, we chose the cycle tour around the tulips fields in Lisse.

This was an awesome experience. We cycled along the fields, stopping by the tulips every now and then. The tulips in a huge field offer a completely different visual treat than in a garden. It was great to be able to get some amazing clicks - all in all, we enjoyed the tour thoroughly. Now, looking forward to covering an even larger area next year :)

Some pointers for a great tour :
    • Bikes, single and tandem, are available for rent at the main entrance of the Keukenhof gardens and not near the car park though you will see the "Rent a Bike" board at the car park too.
    • The bike hire costs 8.50 per day, the cost includes a route map. You can plan your own trip around the fields with the map.
    • Take your own sweet time to check out the fields, get some great clicks and enjoy the journey instead of being in a rush to complete the whole tour.
    • Be sure to cover your head and carry water bottles.
    • The timings are from 9.30 to 18.00 when the last bike can be hired. The bikes should be returned before 19.30.
For more photos, check out my article on EALC - Cycling through Lisse Tulips Fields - A Photo Tour!

    Coversations with an Expat Writer!

I received an email in the beginning of this week from Jeremy Holland - an American expat from Los Angeles who has lived in Barcelona before moving to Holland.

The conversation flowed and he has been kind enough to send me a copy of his book called From Barcelona Vol. 1: Stories Behind The City. The book is a short story collection about Barcelona - its history, its legends and its people . Ten revealing stories that are loosely intertwined. I am sure I will enjoy the book.

Jeremy also maintains a blog Holland from Holland where he blogs about his new life in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. Stated as "A must read, must have for tourists and expats alike" by Rosie Reay - author, book critic - Catalunya Chronicle, you are sure going to enjoy it too. Check out the book below.
